Geography at Colwich

‘The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exist across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.’

Barack Obama

Geography is the study of the world around us and at Colwich we aim to inspire a lifelong curiosity about the world, its people and the children’s own personal place within it.  Through memorable learning opportunities, children will master the geographical skills of fieldwork, position, direction and map work and deepen their understanding of place through studying locations, both near and far, to develop insight and contextual knowledge of globally significant places and understanding of the processes that give rise to key physical and human features of the world, along with how they bring about variation and change over time. We want our children to understand the diverse world in which we all live, exploring how we effect the world and how the world can affect us. We aim to advance our children’s curiosity and a fascination of the world with lessons that provide opportunities for challenge. Wherever possible we intend to encourage a love of geography through fieldwork and on educational visits.
